RoboCop TV Series Green-Lit: A Seemingly Timely and Ironic Announcement
In 1987, Paul Verhoeven released his skewering of corporate America, corporate greed and corruption, and the nature of being human. The science-fiction hit, revered even more in the decades since its release, received several sequels and spin-offs that missed the point, while more recent entries held more true to the original film.
Now, in an age when digitisation is becoming much more prominent, and AI is seemingly taking over, RoboCop looks to be the ideal story and setting to return to. The irony is that one of America’s corporate goliaths that’s embedded itself in the AI race has green-lit the upcoming RoboCop show.
Eight Episodes for the New RoboCop
Since Amazon expanded its portfolio by gobbling up MGM in 2022, it’s been looking to bank on its newly acquired IPs. RoboCop has reportedly been in the works since they absorbed MGM, and now, an eight-episode show has officially been green-lit, buoyed by some big names around the project.
Peter Ocko, who has written for Black Sails, Pushing Daisies, The Office, and 1990s sitcom Dinosaurs, is the writer, showrunner, and executive producer. Around him, Blumhouse Atomic Monster will lend James Wan, Rob Hackett, and Michael Clear to executive produce. Plus, Michael Miner and Ed Neumeier will executive produce.
The army of producers to make executive decisions on the show extends further, with Danielle Bozzone reportedly also overseeing the project and co-executive producing. It all seems rather corporate rather than creative from this point of view. Comments from Wan to THR suggest that he at least understands the original.
Amazon isn’t unaccustomed to ironic choices for their Prime Video platform. After all, the bookseller purchased the rights to a segment of Middle-earth, released special book covers to tie the original works with the new TV show, and then made The Rings of Power, which simply doesn’t have anything to do with any of Tolkien’s works.
RoboCop’s Resurgence in Entertainment
It’d be fair to say that Amazon doesn’t really care about the point or premise of RoboCop, only that it can prove to be a selling point for their overall subscription model. The same goes for The Rings of Power, The Wheel of Time, and so on. It’s a big IP to bolster their virtual library.
Right now, because of what’s going on in the world and elsewhere in entertainment, RoboCop is extremely bankable. We’ve seen reports of the 2014 reboot, which isn’t very well rated, surge into the top ten movies on Paramount+ this summer, and its expansion into other entertainment mediums has gone very well.
RoboCop has made an emphatic return to consoles and online gaming alike. Now, the casino UK players go to boasts the RoboCop Cash Collect game. Joining a series that also includes The Walking Dead and Breaking Bad, it leans into the setting, sights, and sounds of the original flick, with the game’s popularity showcasing the IP’s enduring appeal.
All of this helps to make RoboCop a very easy premise to green light in 2026. Now, the studio will move on to casting before a planned January 2027 shoot. How well it’ll fare compared to the vast RoboCop franchise, let alone the themes of the original, will be interesting to see.
