The Location Water Plan Every Remote Shoot Skips Until Day Three
Put water on the call sheet the same week you book the generator. That is the whole fix, and it gets skipped on most remote blocks because nobody owns it. The generator has a rental number and the medic has a phone number, while water arrives as a case count somebody guessed at in the production office. Usually the person who ends up owning it is a driver, on day three, with a truck that was supposed to be moving set dressing. Treating water where you stand, using water filtration systems sized to your real headcount, hands you back the vehicle and the driver. It also hands back the forty minutes a day your crew spends queuing at the one tap they trust.
Remote Call Sheets Rarely Name A Source
Pull up the last call sheet from somewhere genuinely far out. Vendors, numbers, contacts, all of it accounted for, and then drinking water sitting there as an assumption. On a 40-person crew six weeks into a Baja schedule, the assumption is what breaks first. Nobody should drink or make ice from a local well, stream or tank on appearance alone, because water that looks clean fails tests constantly, and the EPA’s national primary drinking water regulations allow no more than 5.0% of a month’s samples to come back positive for total coliforms, with a flat zero tolerance per 100 mL for E. coli. If somebody does get hit, persistent vomiting, bloody diarrhoea or the unsteadiness of real dehydration means a doctor, not a rest day and a sachet of rehydration salts. The plain version of the argument is this. Treating water on location costs less than the truck, the driver and the schedule that resupply quietly eats.
Crew Sickness Costs Shoot Days Not Sick Days
Sick days are not the expense. The expense is the shoot day you lose. Say that Baja block carries a $40,000 daily burn as an illustration: four people down on the same morning does not cost you four day rates, it costs the setup you cannot light because two grips and a gaffer are in a hotel bathroom. Job after job, the same pattern turns up, a cluster of illness three or four days after somebody topped up a cooler from a tap nobody had tested. And at the time it never reads as water. It reads as the heat, or the caterer, or something eaten on the drive back into town.
Log Reduction And Microns In Plain English
Spec sheets talk in logs. What water engineers call log reduction just means orders of magnitude removed, so one log is 90% gone and six logs is the 99.9999% figure printed on the good units. A four-stage system that pairs micro-filtration with ultraviolet light is doing two unrelated jobs, since the filter stops anything with physical size, cysts and sediment and bacteria measured in fractions of a micron, while the lamp scrambles the genetic material of whatever slips past. A micron is a thousandth of a millimetre, which should tell you a 0.1 micron pore has nothing in common with a coffee filter. Ask any vendor of water filtration systems for the certification standing behind the percentage rather than the percentage itself, because 99.9999% on a brochure and 99.9999% measured through NSF-certified components are not the same claim.
Check The Source Before The Generator Order
Scouting a location means scouting its water, and that happens before anyone signs off on power. Where does it come from, how long is the haul, and who else draws on it once the dry season sets in? Sizing follows headcount, never acreage. Budget a gallon and a half per person per day for drinking. Call it two, honestly, once the sun is up and the camera department is standing on open sand. For 40 people that lands around 80 gallons a day, which a one gallon per minute portable unit clears in a bit over an hour, while a 25 gallon per minute system covers drinking, washdown and the honey wagon before second breakfast. Relief operations work to far leaner floors than any film unit: UNICEF’s Gaza situation update in May 2026 reported an estimated 82% of families there water insecure, with up to 70% unable to reach even the emergency minimum of 6 litres per person per day. A shoot is not an emergency. The arithmetic is still the same arithmetic, and it should decide the unit you rent.
What Week One And Week Three Look Like
The first week always looks fine. Cases came in with the trucks, the crew is still drinking what it carried from town, and nobody has asked yet where the next pallet is coming from. Around the end of week two the pallets thin out and a driver starts making a four-hour round trip that appears on no schedule anyone approved. By week three the resupply run owns your schedule, because it decides when the truck is free, which decides when second unit can move at all. A treatment unit sitting at basecamp changes that specific week, since the run simply stops happening. By the final week of a six-week block you are down to a maintenance rhythm, a filter check and a lamp hour count, which is the dull outcome you were paying for the whole time.
The Short List Worth Taping To The Truck
Before a unit heads out to a remote block, know where the water comes from, know who tested it and when they tested it, and know the gallons-per-day number your headcount actually generates rather than the one a brochure leads with. Put a name against water the way you put a name against power, and get the treatment unit into basecamp before day one instead of after day three. What you buy is not really water. It is a truck, a driver, and the two hours a day the pair of them were losing to a highway, which is a cheaper line item than most productions assume and the one that keeps the third-day scramble from ever starting.
